Farmers , Fishwives, Foresters and Foes. Some visitors to the markets and fairs of Forres.
Thu, 18 June 2026 @ 19:15 - 20:45

A gentle, evening stroll to illuminate some of the activities which made the ancient Borough of Forres the vibrant centre that it has been through the ages.
We’ll take a leisurely walk through the heart of the town and discover how people came to Forres to trade produce, livestock, goods and their own selves. What was kebbuck? What was the Lowran Mairket? How many folk thronged the streets on Feein’ Day. Some of the reasons people made there way here might be surprising to us today.
We’ll start at the east end of the High Street and walk along to the Market Cross. From there we’ll leave the High Street to follow the original main route into the town, look at the Market Green and the site of the indoor Mart. The walk will take us in a loop back over the old brewery bridge to finish by the site of Forres Castle, which is next to the post office.
From the east end of the original Borough, we’ll follow the High Street, then trace the route of the old main road into Forres to return to the Market Green and the site of the Mart. At the south of the the green we’ll cross the old brewery bridge to come back up to finish by the original site of Forres Castle.
Kath Todd will be leading this event to raise funds for the Moray Way Association. There will be a concession for members. If you are not already a member, you will be able to become one by signing up here >
