This is a new walk for 2026. Explore the wilds and scenery of Lochindorb and part of the Dava Moor. A circular walk around the loch, which is famous for its connections with the Wolf of Badenoch and the island castle. Learn about the kelpies and fairies, the location of the novel ‘The Key Above the Door’ and the social history of the people who lived on the Dava moor. If the weather is favourable, the views extend from the Cairngorms to Ben Rinnes, Ben Wyvis and Morven in Caithness. A walk with so much to offer.

The walk begins beside Lochindorb and follows farm tracks and a path around the north shore to join the minor road at the west end. We’ll then walk about a half mile on the road, then join the estate hill track south past Drumroy. The route then heads slightly uphill on hill/sheep path to join estate track back downhill to rejoin main road on south side of Lochindorb back to start. The route can be slightly boggy in wet weather, but flat for three-quarters of the route with one minor elevation.

From the north: Nairn or Forres drive to Dava and on the A939 turn right after Dava village onto the signed Lochindorb minor, single track road with passing places. About 1.5 miles will see Lochindorb and a small parking area on the right beside a gate where the loch begins. If lack of parking drive along shore road about 100 m and there is more parking on the left.

From the south drive north from Grantown-on-Spey on A939 to Forres/Nairn. Turn off on lochindorb road just before bridge at Dava.
