Drawn Into the Landscape: Geology and Art Along the Moray Coast
Sat, 13 June 2026 @ 10:30 - 14:30

A circular walk and sketch around the Portknockie coastline, exploring the geology, heritage and landscape of the area.
Elgin Museum Volunteers Dave and Claire are your guides on this circular walk around the Portknockie coastline. We’ll explore the fascinating geology of the area, learn about the heritage of the village, and make a series of sketches along the way to create a visual story of our walk.
We’ll visit Portknockie Harbour, Green Castle, Bow Fiddle Rock, the Whale’s Mou rock formation, Jenny’s Well and Cave, before returning through the village. Accessibility of part of the route is dependent on tide times, so the start location and direction of travel will be confirmed nearer the time.
The route is over uneven ground and pavements, and includes some steep terrain. We’ll also be following the path along the cliff tops, where there is a steep drop on one side. A reasonable level of fitness is required.
It is essential that participants wear or carry suitable clothing and footwear that are appropriate for the path and potential weather conditions. Items to be considered include multiple layers, waterproofs, sturdy walking shoes or boots, hats, sunglasses, insect repellent and sunscreen. If you have a small folding stool, you may wish to bring this (or a small towel/blanket) to sit on while we sketch.
Sufficient food & liquid should also be carried. Toilet facilities are available at Portknockie Harbour.
No previous drawing experience is required! Price includes all necessary art supplies to capture a unique memento of your walk.
