Explore hidden histories in the Braes of Glenlivet.

Hidden histories: Join Tomintoul & Glenlivet Heritage Ranger Lydia Fisher for an afternoon walk from East Auchavaich Car Park in Chapeltown into the remote and beautiful Braes of Glenlivet. Along the way we’ll be exploring the archaeology, landscape, and cultural history of the Glenlivet Estate. After a picnic on the hills, we’ll return to the car park.

The route will take us into the Ladder Hills along the Malcolm Gillespie Smuggler’s Trail and lead us to the Clach Neart, Glenlivet’s Lifting Stone. This 127kg stone of strength is located in a remote location on a stone plinth along one of Glenlivet’s coffin roads. Coffin roads are a marked feature of the landscape of the Scottish Highlands and islands and were used to move the dead from remote communities to consecrated ground.

The Glenlivet Estate abounds with oystercatchers, curlews, and lapwings in the spring and summer months – be sure to bring your binoculars if you have them.
