SUMMARY:Moray Way Association AGM
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for the Moray Way Association AGM – Wednesday\, 3 September 2025 \nWe’re excited to invite you to this year’s AGM\, which will follow our popular format: a short (and enjoyable!) walk\, followed by a relaxed chat and refreshments. A huge thanks to Beinn Books & Café for kindly hosting us in their beautiful shop. \nThe formal business of the AGM is usually wrapped up quickly\, after which we’ll share highlights from this year’s Moray Walking & Outdoor Festival and our plans for the future. We love hearing from our members\, so any feedback\, ideas\, or suggestions are always welcome! \nThis year\, we’re especially keen to hear your thoughts on attracting sponsors. Rising costs\, particularly insurance\, mean we’re thinking carefully about the future of our Festival\, and your creative ideas would be greatly appreciated. \nWe’re also always on the lookout for friendly\, enthusiastic people to join our small committee—but don’t worry\, attending the AGM doesn’t mean you’re automatically signing up! \nOnce you’ve booked\, we’ll send you the agenda and all the info you’ll need. We hope you can join us for a stroll\, a cup of tea or coffee\, and a good chat with fellow members. \n***Please book in advance\, as Beinn has a limited capacity for this event

SUMMARY:Are We Being Good Ancestors? – A Reflective Walk Through Time
DESCRIPTION:Join artist-in-residence Jenny Fraser Harris and Stephen Coomber from the Moray Way Association for a thought-provoking walk through Elgin\, exploring how our past and present shape the future. Starting at the Plainstones\, we’ll step back in time to uncover Elgin’s historic ‘forum’ before journeying through Cooper Park\, the Cathedral\, and beyond\, pausing to personally and collectively reflect\, question\, and reimagine our role as ancestors of the future. \nThe walk will conclude at the AIM (Arts In Moray) Showcase at Moray School of Art where we’ll visit the art piece inspired by these themes and you will be invited to contribute to the piece through an optional short writing activity. \nAbout Jenny Fraser Harris \nJenny Fraser Harris is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in cultural ecology.“I explore themes of resilience\, both human and environmental\, through abstract painting\, material experimentation\, and reflective dialogue. My practice seeks to stretch time and consider the long-term\, whilst examining the intricate relationships between people and land. Through layers of paint and material\, I uncover the interconnected\, often-overlooked stories that shape our present and influence the world around us. I develop and integrate materials and pigments sourced from ‘waste’ and bio-substances\, using them to contrast and amplify these narratives. Critical reflection and open dialogue are integral to my process. \nMy intention is to transform our understanding of time\, place\, and the choices we have in the present. Through highlighting the voices of future generations\, I hope to foster a deeper awareness of our interconnection with nature and our collective responsibility for the future. \njennyfraserharris.com \nArts In Moray (AIM) \nSince June 2021\, the Moray Way Association has been part of the Arts In Moray (AIM) Collective\, which initially received funding from Creative Scotland’s Culture Collective programme. This national pilot programme aimed to establish a network of creative practitioners\, organisations\, and communities working together to make a positive difference locally and nationally in response to COVID-19. \nThe AIM collective\, which includes Dance North Scotland\, Moray Arts Development Engagement (M:ADE)\, Wildbird\, and the Moray Way Association\, has employed new and radical approaches to engaging a network of creative practitioners and communities within Moray through residency programmes that have supported artists from 2021 to 2025. \nThe Moray Way AIM III project also features the work of Hayley Anderson\, Kate Cameron Reid\, Stuart Mc Adam\, and Alex Williamson.  Each artist was asked to reimagine The Pilgrimages in Moray – A Guide to the County\, a 1924 pocket guidebook featuring descriptions of walks across Moray. Discovered by the MWA Chair at Moray Waste Busters\, this historic book was originally created to inspire both locals and visitors to explore the rich heritage of Moray. However\, the author lamented the absence of illustrations\, maps\, and reference notes—elements that could have brought the book to life for a wider audience. \nEach artist collaborated with a member of the Moray Way Association\, walking the routes together. The artists then went on to refine or reimagine the routes\, bringing them to life through their perspectives. Using creative and innovative approaches\, they created contemporary interpretations of the walks that engaged new audiences while celebrating the stories of Moray. \n

SUMMARY:A Fisherman's Diary
DESCRIPTION:Learn how Kate explored the diary stories\, mapping significant and poignant locations marked by history and community. Inspired by the walk\, Kate has also created artworks that will be part of the AIM (Arts in Moray) Showcase at UHI Moray\, Inner Art Gallery on Saturday\, March 7\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nWith special thanks to Lossiemouth Fisheries and Community Museum\, Isobel Nelson\, Dennis Slater\, Davey Mackenzie and Angie Stewart. \nAbout Kate Cameron Reid \nhttps://www.katecameronreid.com \nKate Cameron Reid is a multidisciplinary\, contemporary artist. Her work is primarily autobiographical and self-explorative\, recreating fragments of a narrative in each piece. Often utilising personal belongings or found objects as a metaphor\, she aims to draw the viewer into her work through the intimacy of the story being told. Each work is a fragment of time\, depicting memories and life events\, exploring emotionally charged themes of loss\, grief\, trauma\, and fragility. The forefront of her creative practice is to raise questions in the storytelling of each piece and create continuous conversation\, with the fundamental intention for human connection. \nA graduate of Central Saint Martins (BA Hons)\, Kate started her career on Savile Row\, worked in the fashion industry for 15 years and lectured at Ravensbourne University London\, before transitioning to contemporary art. Having previously lived in London\, Kate relocated to Scotland and now resides on the North-East coast. Kate has recently exhibited at the Cabrach Trust\, Elgin Cathedral and The Royal Scottish Academy. \nArts In Moray (AIM) \nSince June 2021\, the Moray Way Association has been part of the Arts In Moray (AIM) Collective\, which initially received funding from Creative Scotland’s Culture Collective programme. SUMMARY:Restful Rothes
DESCRIPTION:Sorry – cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. \n  \nWalking is well known to be beneficial to our health both physical and mental. Spending time outdoors means we can benefit from trees in particular which give out substances which are known to be very good for us\, helping lower blood pressure and strengthen our immune systems. This will be a slow walk using our senses and taking time to explore the environment in detail and in-depth. \nLed by AIM (Arts in Moray) Artist in Residence Norma Hunter on behalf of the Moray Way Association. Funds raised will go to the development of The Rothes Way. \nSince June 2021 the Moray Way Association has been part of the Arts In Moray (AIM) Collective\, which received Creative Scotland’s Culture Collective programme funding. This national pilot programme aims to establish a network of creative practitioners\, organisations and communities working together to create a positive difference locally and nationally in response to COVID-19. \nThe AIM collective was started by Dance North Scotland\, Moray Arts Development Engagement (M:ADE)\,  Wildbird and the Moray Way Association. The group has been employing a new and radical approach to engaging a network of creative practitioners and communities within Moray through a residency programme that initially supported eight artist residencies from 2021 to 2022. Further funding this year has allowed the collective to employ a further 6 artists and 3 artists/producers.

SUMMARY:Sounds of the Moray Way
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT \nThe Moray Way Soundwalk presents liminal moments using stories\, memories and atmospheres. It captures moments while walking that are so fleeting and familiar\, that they are often missed. \nThe soundwalk has been created and produced by Lise Olsen an AIM (Arts In Moray) Artist in residency for the Moray Way Association. Her practice involved collecting stories from the community and defining the ‘in between’ experiences happening within a dramatic Scottish landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sound map covers the 100 mile walking route of the Moray Way in the northeast of Scotland and is a tool for walking and thinking. By listening to the soundscapes and audio clips during your walk\, you can gain an insight into the rhythm\, history\, ecology and community of the Moray Way. Lise will be at various locations throughout Moray during the Moray Walking & Outdoor Festival to explain how you can hear this immersive sonic journey. \nOr why not download the ECHOES App and search for Moray Way Soundwalk now!

SUMMARY:Changing Churches\, Chapels and Clachans
DESCRIPTION:This walk will join up different historical religious sites from past beliefs and faith and forward to the present day to Rafford Kirk\, which is under threat of closure like many churches in Scotland.\n \nReligious buildings are the central focus of a town’s skyline and often vital hubs to local neighbourhoods\, providing various community activities and services\, but with falling congregations\, too few ministers\, creaking old buildings and rising costs\, these sites are being sold off. \nOur route will visit other sites which have had prominent roles in people’s thoughts and faith in the past\, and on our journey\, we hope to discuss many questions around faith and religious sites:   Are faith and spirituality anchored in a place?  Why our faiths change?  Is there a spiritual dimension to our experience of nature? How can / or should these abandoned buildings be re-purposed\, and how can communities take control? \nWe’ll finish at Rafford Kirk\, where we have been invited to visit before its destiny is decided and have a welcomed cuppa and cake at the end of the walk.

SUMMARY:Four Hillocks and a Cavity
DESCRIPTION:The 25 ha. area of known as Clunyhill Woodlands has been a public parkland and pleasure ground since at least the late 18th. Century. It consists of four\, in places\, steep-sided\, hillocks symmetrically placed around a single hollow .known sometimes as Hell’s Hole. It is a forestry area managed on behalf of Moray Council\, and in the midst of it are three large features\, the Nelson Tower visible from many roads around\, the area of what was from 1848 to recently the town cemetery\, and the 19th century mansion which accommodates students at the Findhorn Foundation College\, and which was formerly Forres Hydro\, a major Highland Railway built\, hotel which had an international reputation for the therapeutic properties of its surroundings.

SUMMARY:Pilgrims\, Pillars & Midsummer Mysteries
DESCRIPTION:Inchberry and Orton are now a little backwater but in the past pilgrims would walk “bairfit and bairleggit” as it was “famed as far as the Western Isles”. Careful exploration can find traces of these visitors. \nThis quiet corner is an ideal place to take some time to look for the other beings who share our world. It’s certainly the home for birds and beasts and we’ll take time to see what’s out and about in the gloaming. We can guarantee some big beasties! Our forebears also believed that this night was one when the fairies visited. We’ll learn how to behave not to anger the fairy queen and how we can use plants to see our futures. (Results not guaranteed). \nOur walk leads us to Braehead Glamping and Camping where we are invited to sit around a fire and enjoy trying a surprising local gin or other local fruit juices. ( The Braehead Glamping and Camping are also offering discounted rates to single travellers over the Festival period.)

SUMMARY:Dalvey\, Dyke and the Dump
DESCRIPTION:Our walk gives a chance to visit many little known stories of the past. The route is easy walking but passes through a rich variety of landscape. We’ll keep an eye open for interesting flora and fauna as we go and finish up by visiting a site which is trying to preserve our environment and communities for the future.\nThis route will take us through some of the ancient centre of Forres to follow\, then cross the Findhorn. We’ll take time to look at some of the sites of historic interest as we go.\nOver the river\, we have an invitation to go through Dalvey before following the Muckle Burn to Dyke. There will be an opportunity to enjoy some hidden treasures in this pretty village before taking a track to the fringes of Culbin Forest as we turn back towards Forres. As we cross the river again we’ll look for where locals crossed the river on stilts and drop into our friends at Wastebusters for a cuppa and a wee surprise gift.

SUMMARY:Meet your Local Walking Group
DESCRIPTION:There are local walking groups to suit all abilities in Moray – whether it’s a short sociable stroll in the park\, or bagging Munros. This drop-in session will have representatives from many of these groups\, with some holding a ‘taster’ walk following the drop-in (bookable separately). \nSo\, if you are thinking of joining a group\, but not sure which is right for you\, come along \nAt the drop-in\, we will have: \nWalk Moray Health Walks\nA Walk Moray Health Walk is a short (up to an hour-long) low level\, risk assessed walk led by trained walk leaders. Health Walks are aimed at inactive people who would benefit most from doing more physical activity. These can include people who haven’t been active for a while and would like to start again\, people recovering from ill health or who are managing a long term health condition. \nLong Distance Walkers Association\nThe North of Scotland Group of the LDWA holds group walks once a month. Our area covers a wide expanse of the North of Scotland\, from Aberdeen northwards. Group walks are typically between 12 and 25 miles. We also hold ‘challenge’ events\, including the 50 mile Laich O’Moray walk in early October. Details of our programme can be found at https://ldwa.org.uk/NorthWestGrampian/E/0/future-events-list.html \nMoray Ramblers\nMoray Ramblers have been running for over 25 years\, and have over 100 members in the group. We have walk outings twice a month\, alternating on Tuesday and weekend. Our walks are from 7 miles to 12 miles and range from easy\, moderate and hard walks. However\, we always walk to the slowest pace of the group. Walks can be found https://www.facebook.com/groups/438399116311261 \nFochabers Hillwalking and Rambling Club\nWe run a summer programme which is mainly doing Munros and Corbetts. Our winter programme consists mainly of low level walks with a few Corbetts or Grahams mainly in November\, March and April. The programme can be found https://www.facebook.com/Fochabers-Hill-Walking-Rambling-Club-181007335852356/ \nForres 50+ Walking Group\nWe have two sections and walk alternate Fridays and aim to walk between 5 & 10 miles. Up until Covid we tried to use public transport so that we could start at one point and arrive at another but recently we have been doing circular walks with people using their cars – we hope to return to using public transport soon. \nSt John’s Church Walking Group\nThe informal walking group at St John’s started earlier this year and we are small in numbers and all retired members. Three to six miles is the usual distance we cover. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month and usually gather outside the church for a 10.30 start. \nMoray Mountaineering Club\nThe Moray Mountaineering Club was established in 1931 with the declared aim to encourage mountaineering and serve as a bond of union amongst lovers of the Scottish hills. Club activities include monthly day and weekend meets\, regular rock climbing sessions and social functions. A nominated committee member manages each activity. The main interests centre on summer and winter hillwalking\, mountaineering\, climbing\, and ski touring. Details of the programme can be found https://moraymc.wordpress.com/ \nForres Footpaths Trust\nThe Trust is not a walking group as such but has developed a network of paths around Forres for individuals and groups to enjoy. \nMoray Field Club\nThe Moray Field Club is open to anyone who is interested in the geology\, landscapes\, flora and fauna\, history and archaeology of Moray\, and enjoys exploring the outdoors. \nEach year we organise indoor meetings in the winter and early spring\, and at least six local walks\, or expeditions further afield\, in the summer and early autumn.\nFor more information see: https://www.morayfieldclub.org.uk/ \nThe Dava Way Association\nThe Dava Way Association manages and maintains the Dava Way\, one of Scotland’s Great Trails. This follows the old Highland Railway Line for 24 Miles between the historic towns of Forres and Grantown-on-Spey. For more information see: https://davaway.org.uk/
