SUMMARY:Lecht Mine\, Coire Buidhe and Carn Mor
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Rob Cochrane to explore the unique industrial\, cultural and natural heritage of Coire Buidhe\, and bag the Corbet summit of Carn Mor in the process! \nMeeting at the Well of Lecht carpark\, we will set off along the historic smuggling route up onto Carn Dulack\, above Coire Buidhe. As we climb we will have a fantastic birds-eye view of the historic Lecht Mine and the associated earth works\, which provide an insight into how industrialisation rapidly changed the face of this part of Moray. \nOnce up high\, we’ll leave the path behind and traverse a broad ridge which gradually climbs up through an impressive montane blanket bog. On a sunny day we will be treated to an impressive display of Odenata (damsel and dragonflies) as well as sightings of some unique and highly specialised botany and bird life. \nWith expansive views at out backs on a clear day\, we will then branch off onto the main summit ridge of the ladder hills to tag the broad peak of Carn Mor (804m)- the highest point on Glenlivet Estate\, and a Corbet. From here we can look down on mosaic of land uses\, showcasing the true diversity and value that Moray’s rural economy contributes to Scotland. \nFrom here we’ll turn back on ourselves and make our way south\, towards the expansive view of the North Cairngorms\, before decending back into Coire Buidhe via an off-path route. We will then end the day by visiting the historic Lecht Mine workings themselves before making out way back to the cars.

SUMMARY:Battle of Glenlivet (Battle of Alltacoileachan)
DESCRIPTION:Cavalry\, Chainmail\, Cannons\, and the mysterious Spanish Blanks! \nJoin the Ranger for a stunning walk on a remote part of the Estate with views across the Braes of Glenlivet and much beyond. \nBeginning at Allanreid Car Park at the road end\, we’ll pass through birch woods into commercial forestry with views across farmland\, moorland\, and the surrounding hills. The walk follows a forestry track climbing 200m in height. As we climb\, rugged hills will appear through the trees\, resulting in a sense of remoteness. This walk gives an opportunity to see and hear wildlife found in these habitats\, including cuckoos\, deer\, and birds of prey. \nEventually\, we will leave the plantation\, popping out onto wooded moorland and to the site of the Battle of Glenlivet\, which is also known as the Battle of Alltacoileachan. This was a significant historical battle with lasting impacts on politics\, religion\, and warfare. We will reach the furthest point of our journey at a newly installed interpretation panel\, which gives a flavour of these elements of the site\, and where only a little imagination is required to hear the cries of battle. \nWe will then return by the same route. Some of the track is rough and the final 200m crosses un-pathed moorland with heather. We will be in exposed country – Please be prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water. A reasonable level of fitness and the knowledge that you are able to handle this type of terrain is required.

SUMMARY:Carn na Glascoill - from the Braes of Glenlivet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Estate Ranger on a day’s hillwalking to this relatively unfrequented part of Glenlivet. Following last year’s trek into the Cromdales\, we have moved east to the Ladder Hills. \nBeginning in Chapeltown in the Braes of Glenlivet we’ll pass farmland and woodland before emerging onto the moor and open hill. The final ascent to the 733m summit of Carn na Glascoill is steep and takes us to the headwaters of the Livet\, just still within the boundary of Cairngorms National Park. We will initially descend by the same route before continuing on the Smugglers Trail\, crossing the flats and Blye Water before returning to the Braes. \nThis walk will hopefully provide opportunities to see moorland birds and deer while crossing typical northeast Scotland hill and moorland territory. \nThe terrain will be a mix of rough track and heather moorland\, which will involve some steep climbs and take us into a remote\, exposed country. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water. A reasonable level of fitness and the knowledge that you are able to handle this type of terrain is required.

SUMMARY:Drumin - Twinflower\, a Tower House\, and a Riverside Stroll
DESCRIPTION:Join the Estate Ranger for an evening wander along the River Livet and a chance to spot riparian and woodland wildlife. \nWe will detour to see the rare and elusive Twinflower. Growing almost exclusively in the native Caledonian pine forests of Scotland\, Twinflower has suffered as these magnificent forests have been lost. There was one remaining population on Glenlivet\, and we have added it to this with a translocation project. \nWe will look at both sites and discuss the work we have done. \nWe will then finish up at the ruins of Drumin Castle\, a tower house from the 14th century\, where we can explore up to the first floor and look at the walled garden\, which contains an orchard managed by the local Primary School.

SUMMARY:Cromdale Hills from Avonside
DESCRIPTION:Join the Estate Ranger on a day’s hillwalking to this relatively unfrequented part of Glenlivet. Making our way from West Avonside\, we’ll start big and ascend to the highest point in the Cromdales\, Creagan a’ Chaise. At 722m this is classified as a Fiona which is a mountain in Scotland between 2000 & 2500 feet high – these were previously known as Grahams. Near the trig point at the top is a rather large Cairn built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. \nFrom there we will traverse the ridge also taking in the nearby Coronation Cairn\, built to commemorate the crowning of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria in 1902. On a clear day\, the views from the ridge are excellent looking to the Cairngorms and across Speyside. We will continue to take in the lesser summits of Carn Eachie and Carn a Ghille Chearn before making a rough descent back towards Knock farmhouse and onwards to the Car Park. \nThis walk will hopefully provide opportunities to see moorland birds and deer while crossing typical northeast Scotland hill and moorland territory. \nThe terrain will be a mix of rough track and heather moorland\, involve some steep climbs and take us into a remote\, exposed country. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water. A reasonable level of fitness and the knowledge that you are able to handle this type of terrain is required.

SUMMARY:West Avon Side Social Stroll and Kirkmichael Green Hall BBQ
DESCRIPTION:A 2.5-mile stroll\, beginning along the River Avon\, before following a gentle climb through farmland and to the moorland at the foot of the Cromdale Hills. \nPre-Covid this was an annual event and it would be great to get it back with a mix of visitors to the area and residents of the Tomintoul and Glenlivet area. A great chance to chat and share knowledge of the area while wandering through a beautiful mix of scenery and looking for wildlife. \nThe Kirkmichael Green Hall is throwing a BBQ and Raffle afterwards starting at 4 pm with everyone welcome. \n  \nLying between the Ladder Hills and the Cromdale Hills in the Cairngorms National Park\, the two broad straths of the rivers Avon and Livet form the 23\,000 hectare Glenlivet Estate\, part of Crown Estate Scotland. The Crown Estate acquired the Glenlivet Estate in 1937 which today comprises over 30 let farms\, 1500 acres of commercial forests and a sporting tenancy including grouse moors\, salmon fishing and deer stalking. Over the last 25 years\, the Estate has encouraged the development of recreation and tourism\, welcoming a wide range of visitors who come to explore and enjoy the countryside\, helping support local businesses and the tourism economy. The Estate provides a visitor centre\, a range of educational services\, an extensive network of walking trails and a dedicated mountain bike centre.

SUMMARY:Lecht Mine & Scalan Seminary Loop
DESCRIPTION:Starting at the Lecht Mine Car Park\, we will walk a loop visiting the Lecht Mine before climbing the shoulder of Carn Dulack and crossing to the summit of Tom Trumper. From here\, we will descend through the Crofts of Scalan to the Seminary. After a look around the grounds and a bite to eat\, we will head south through the Clash of Scalan\, once again crossing Carn Dulack and descending back towards our starting point. \nThe Lecht Mine was originally opened by the York Buildings Company of London as an iron ore mine in 1730 and has an interesting history. While the secluded building of Scalan (from the Gaelic sgalan\, meaning turf roof) was once a seminary (a college for training priests) and was one of the few places in Scotland where the Catholic faith was kept alive during the troubled times of the 18th century. \nThis is an excellent opportunity to experience two historic sites in one walk\, crossing typical north-east Scotland hill and moorland territory and getting a taste of what it was like to live in the Braes of Glenlivet in the not too distant past. There is also a good chance that we might see some moorland birds and deer. \nThe walk will be on a mix of rough track and heather moorland\, involve some fairly steep climbs and take us into the remote\, exposed country. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water.
