SUMMARY:Cliff & Picts
DESCRIPTION:Duffus to the coast\, then along the cliff and shore to Hopeman; on to Burghead and back to Duffus via Inverugie\, will be the route that Dr John Barrett will take on this walk\, where he’ll be talking about medieval history\, improvement landscapes\, reptilian footprints\, millstones\, quarries – and Picts at Burghead. \nBarrett is a professional archivist and writer who now lives on Speyside in Scotland. He has published original research into historic landscapes and archive sources throughout Britain and Ireland in popular and academic articles\, and (with David Iredale) in four `Shire’ Discovering books. He’s also the writer of The Making of a Scottish Landscape which explores the change of the Moray countryside – and offers an intimate portrait of people in the landscape on the distant shoulder of northeast Scotland.

SUMMARY:Story walk\, Culbin: In the footsteps of botanist Mary McCallum Webster
DESCRIPTION:A highlight of the exterior of the Falconer Museum\, ‘a Victorian gem in the heart of Forres’\, are eight keystone portrait masks of eminent scientists and celebrities of the period\, but…they are all men! \nHence the decision by Friends of the Falconer\,  as part of the museum’s 150th-anniversary celebrations\, to recognise a woman scientist\, Mary McCallum Webster\, of Dyke\, whose ‘Flora of Moray\, Nairn and East Inverness’\, published 1978\, has been described as a masterwork. \nCulbin forest was her happy hunting ground. During our walk\, we shall do some plant finding\, led by an expert\, although we can’t promise her favourite\, a wintergreen; and listen\, briefly\, to her story\, told by Mary Byatt\, author of the appreciation of McCallum Webster in the book ‘Women of Moray’. We also hope to have some anecdotes from the family of Olga Stewart\, McCallum Webster’s main illustrator. \nLook out for more Friends’ Falconer150 events later in the year.
