SUMMARY:Western Side of the Findhorn Gorge
DESCRIPTION:This is a five-mile circular walk through delightful woodlands that explores the western bank of the River Findhorn gorge using forest tracks and fishermen’s paths. There are steep drops to one side of the path in places. The walk has been popular and much enjoyed on the previous occasions it has been included in the Festival. It is in an area that is rarely visited by walkers. \nForres Footpaths Trust has been leading walks since the start of the Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival. They use funds raised to maintain and update their website and identify and publish new routes.

SUMMARY:Glenfiddich to Glenlivet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rangers from Dorenell Ranger Service and Glenlivet Ranger Service for a walk up the River Fiddich all the way to its source then over the watershed to meet the River Livet. We’ll park at the finish point in Glenlivet and be transported by coach to the start at Bridgehaugh\, south of Dufftown. The route will follow Moray core path SP29\, going past Glenfiddich Lodge and up Glenfiddich itself where we’ll have an opportunity to see Elf House cave and the McHardy stone. Once up on the watershed\, we’ll hopefully have views across to the Cairngorms before following the Suie Burn down to the River Livet and out to Glenlivet. \nAlong the route\, the Rangers will talk about the Cultural and Natural History of the area and will be on hand to point out any wildlife along the route which could include Red Deer and various birds of prey including Golden Eagles and White-tailed Eagles. \nAlthough starting off on patchy tarmac track the route is mainly rough landrover tracks with a number of small stream and river crossings. A larger river crossing towards the end can be avoided by a bridge further upstream but walkers should come prepared for potentially wet feet. \n\nMark Johnston is Head Ranger for the 23000ha Glenlivet Estate. The Crown Estate acquired Glenlivet (now managed by Crown Estate Scotland) in 1937 which today comprises over 30 let farms\, 1500 acres of commercial forests and a sporting tenancy including grouse moors\, salmon fishing and deer stalking. \nStephen Reeves is Head Ranger for the Dorenell Ranger Service\, set up by EDF Renewables in July 2019 as part of the Dorenell Wind Farm on Cabrach and Glenfiddich estate. Based at the Dorenell Wind Farm Visitor Centre\, the Rangers are responsible for delivering the Access Strategy and Habitat Management Plan whilst delivering environmental education and guided walks in the Cabrach and surrounding area.

SUMMARY:Mindful Photography Walk
DESCRIPTION:Take a walk along the Moray Coast and learn how to connect with nature through photography. During this guided walk\, we will make our way along the coastal path between Burghead and Hopeman. While walking\, Kim will open your eyes up to the many photography opportunities available along the way. Using your camera (or phone)\, you will learn to see the world around you in a new light and capture many subjects as you do so. This walk will be done at a leisurely pace\, allowing us to mindfully observe and tune in to the world around us. Kim will encourage you to use all your senses to find photographic subjects. This will include watching the waves crash to shore\, listening out for wildlife and touching the rocks that line the coastline. We will focus on the smaller aspects of the landscape and how to capture all the shapes and patterns that can be found around us. Halfway through the walk\, we will stop by the sea to eat our lunch and do some mindful exercises. \nThis walk is open to all photographic abilities – no matter what camera or phone you own.

SUMMARY:Cooks Cairn with Pete Hags
DESCRIPTION:Starts and finishes at NJ 351 343 Dorenell Wind Farm main entrance Car Park. (Glacks of Balloch). Mostly off-path and off-road after a warm-up on the forest track. This is a spectacular\, short hill run which takes the ridge from Scaut Hill (Trig point) to Cook’s Cairn and back. \nThere are turbine paths that cross the route\, but as they lead nowhere\, the best route is on the ridge direct. The object of this short run is to build skills to cross rough hill country running style. There are spectacular views to Cabrach (left) Corryhabbie (right)\, Blackwater\, Glenlivet and the Ladder hills; all part of this group. Many other combinations are possible in this range and this is a good introduction to it. There are no river crossings needed but expect to get wet feet unless it is bone dry. The situation is exposed (wind or heat). If the winds are too high\, there is a plan B to simply turn back at Carn Allt Chlaiginn. \nThe route takes in a huge variety of surfaces: some forest track\, steep grass\, rough hill surface\, heather\, peat hags and slight bogginess. There are no cliffs\, no crags and no scrambling is needed. It is a great introduction to the ‘off-piste’ nature of this area.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Moray Council Officer for a walk up a secluded glen nestled in the Glenlivet hills to a rustic log cabin wildlife hide overlooking the head of the glen and across to Blairfindy moor and down to the Spey valley. Good chance of seeing red deer\, red grouse and mountain hare. And if we’re blessed with good fortune we might get a sighting of a hen harrier and merlin flying by.

Our walks are being specially planned to offer participants a range of walking experiences from coast to Corbett and from river to glen. \nAs well as social walks\, we put on two challenge walks each year: Heldon Hill Sunset Walk\, and the Laich o’Moray 50-mile challenge in October.

DESCRIPTION:Walking as part of a small group brings many benefits to physical\, mental and social health. These benefits are deepened when it is possible to walk in greenspace where the beauty of nature and its seasonal shifts can be experienced first-hand and appreciated. We are delighted to host this walk amidst the pretty woodland and by the lochside on the Gordon Castle Estate. \nAs we move along the trail\, we’ll introduce you to some mindful walking in nature activities where you will be encouraged to tune into your senses\, allowing your attention to be drawn by both the small details and big moments around you. You will be welcome to share your observations if you feel comfortable doing so. The impact of such practice on your well-being will be discussed using the latest scientific research on nature connectedness and we’ll leave you with some ideas on how to hone this for yourself in your own time.

SUMMARY:Story walk\, Culbin: In the footsteps of botanist Mary McCallum Webster
DESCRIPTION:A highlight of the exterior of the Falconer Museum\, ‘a Victorian gem in the heart of Forres’\, are eight keystone portrait masks of eminent scientists and celebrities of the period\, but…they are all men! \nHence the decision by Friends of the Falconer\,  as part of the museum’s 150th-anniversary celebrations\, to recognise a woman scientist\, Mary McCallum Webster\, of Dyke\, whose ‘Flora of Moray\, Nairn and East Inverness’\, published 1978\, has been described as a masterwork. \nCulbin forest was her happy hunting ground. During our walk\, we shall do some plant finding\, led by an expert\, although we can’t promise her favourite\, a wintergreen; and listen\, briefly\, to her story\, told by Mary Byatt\, author of the appreciation of McCallum Webster in the book ‘Women of Moray’. We also hope to have some anecdotes from the family of Olga Stewart\, McCallum Webster’s main illustrator. \nLook out for more Friends’ Falconer150 events later in the year.

SUMMARY:Western Side of the Findhorn Gorge
DESCRIPTION:This is a five-mile circular walk through delightful woodlands that explores the western bank of the River Findhorn gorge using forest tracks and fishermen’s paths. There are steep drops to one side of the path in places. The walk has been popular and much enjoyed on the previous occasions it has been included in the Festival. It is in an area that is rarely visited by walkers. \nForres Footpaths Trust has been leading walks since the start of the Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival. They use funds raised to maintain and update their website and identify and publish new routes.

DESCRIPTION:Whether you own a camera or just have a camera phone\, Kim will open your eyes to the many subjects you can photograph when walking in nature. During the walk\, you will be encouraged to use all your senses to find photographic opportunities. As well as capturing the landscape around us\, we will also be looking at the smaller aspects of nature and subjects you may never have thought about capturing before. \nThis walk is planned in the evening and around sunset to showcase the important role of light when photography. While a good sunset cannot be guaranteed\, it is hoped that we will be lucky enough to enjoy a golden sunset along the beach to end the evening walk. Halfway through the walk\, we will stop to undertake some mindfulness exercises. This will help you tune your senses to what is happening around us and open up more photographic opportunities.

This unusual event allows walkers to listen to a mix of History\, Myths\, and Legends to a background of sound that brings the storytelling to life. \nTales o Fowk & Water Beasties is a creative collaboration between local storyteller Ben Hinnie and The Moray Way Association’s artist in residence\, Lise Olsen. They have worked together to create a soundwalk through history\, produced for the Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival. \nLise is one of NINE artists from the Arts in Moray (AIM) CULTURE COLLECTIVE Programme funded by Creative Scotland and is the Moray Way Artist in Residency. SUMMARY:The Two Lodges
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at the Dorenell Visitor we’ll board a coach to take us along the road to the Glenfiddich trailhead where we’ll start our walk. Heading up Glenfiddich we’ll pass through woodland before reaching Glenfiddich Lodge. From there we’ll then follow the linking trail to Blackwater Lodge\, walking up and round the side of Scaut Hill and past Dorenell Wind Farm before descending down into the Black Water Valley to Blackwater Lodge. The last leg will take us along the Blackwater trail to finish at the Visitor Centre. \nAlong the route\, the Ranger will talk about the natural and cultural history of the area and we’ll keep a lookout for wildlife such as the Golden Eagle and Red Deer. We will have the opportunity to view the outside of Glenfiddich and Blackwater Lodges but we will not be going inside as they are unsafe. \nThe walk will mostly be on rough tracks with some muddy sections towards the end. The route can be quite exposed so come prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of food. \nAll profits of the walk will be going to Prostate Cancer UK

SUMMARY:Pilgrims\, Pillars & Midsummer Mysteries
DESCRIPTION:Inchberry and Orton are now a little backwater but in the past pilgrims would walk “bairfit and bairleggit” as it was “famed as far as the Western Isles”. Careful exploration can find traces of these visitors. \nThis quiet corner is an ideal place to take some time to look for the other beings who share our world. It’s certainly the home for birds and beasts and we’ll take time to see what’s out and about in the gloaming. We can guarantee some big beasties! Our forebears also believed that this night was one when the fairies visited. We’ll learn how to behave not to anger the fairy queen and how we can use plants to see our futures. (Results not guaranteed). \nOur walk leads us to Braehead Glamping and Camping where we are invited to sit around a fire and enjoy trying a surprising local gin or other local fruit juices. ( The Braehead Glamping and Camping are also offering discounted rates to single travellers over the Festival period.)

SUMMARY:Limekiln Woods Circuit
DESCRIPTION:Join enthusiastic walker Elaine Crowe for a varied and motivating walk of two halves\, the first half takes us through Limekiln Woods and a section of the Findhorn River. There is a variety of wildlife to be seen and many varieties of trees and plant life to observe (the colours reflecting the time and season of the year). The informal and dramatic woodland paths high above the swirling waters of the River Findhorn and its gorge provide dramatic glimpses of the river below. The steep cliff edge is unprotected\, but there are excellent views of the rushing waters below. The water is often dark brown\, coloured by the peat of the Monadhliath Mountains where it rises and flows from. \nWe then continue onto Loch of Blairs which again has many varieties of trees and plant life. The Loch is approximately 11 hectares in area and sits in the north-western area of Altyre Estate\, lying close to the town of Forres in Moray. Once used as a trout fishery by anglers in the area the availability of boat hire ceased around 15 years ago. The costs of ongoing maintenance became too high for The Moray Council and they ended their involvement with the loch in the early 2000s. As a result\, the boathouse\, bothy\, stables and cart building fell into disrepair and the loch sat quietly in its surroundings becoming sadly neglected and overgrown with Rhododendrons\, Phragmites Reeds and dense aquatic weeds. \nHowever\, The Friends of Blairs Loch (FBL) are a group of industrious volunteers who are working hard to restore the loch back to its former glory and to the community as an amenity for recreation and educational purposes. Although the work is ongoing the volunteers are working towards reopening the water at Loch of Blairs for trout fishing. Both the bothy and boathouse have been refurbished and a wonderful new outdoor learning venue has replaced the old stable and cart block. \nIn addition\, the Rhododendrons and other tenacious plant life have been cleared to extend the footpath network around the loch and open up the panoramic views of the loch. The loch has been made even more appealing with the addition of three bird hides built by volunteers on the water’s edge\, connecting bridges\, benches and picnic tables. It remains a haven for birdlife and a popular walking venue for “those in the know”.

DESCRIPTION:Walking as part of a small group brings many benefits to physical\, mental and social health. These benefits are deepened when it is possible to walk in greenspace where the beauty of nature and its seasonal shifts can be experienced first-hand and appreciated. We are delighted to host this walk amidst the pretty woodland and by the lochside on the Gordon Castle Estate. \nAs we move along the trail\, we’ll introduce you to some mindful walking in nature activities where you will be encouraged to tune into your senses\, allowing your attention to be drawn by both the small details and big moments around you. You will be welcome to share your observations if you feel comfortable doing so. The impact of such practice on your well-being will be discussed using the latest scientific research on nature connectedness and we’ll leave you with some ideas on how to hone this for yourself in your own time.

DESCRIPTION:In response to the COVID and Climate Crisis\, artist Mettje Hunneman has created Forest VIDEOLAB\, an E-Bike equipped with projection gear\, portable power\, solar panel and all-terrain tyres. \nForest VIDEOLAB is a series of site-specific\, public video projections with original soundscapes by former international DJ Swayzak. Highlighting and transforming green spaces across Scotland and questioning our place in nature\, Swayzak’s signature dark and mysterious sound palettes and Hunnerman’s projections draw the audience deep into these mini-universes. \nIn partnership with the Glenlivet Ranger\, the event will start with a dusk walk – leading up to the projection site – to search for night creatures\, including bats\, moths\, and owls. Find out about the effects of light on our native wildlife and other tales of the dark. \n

SUMMARY:Glenfiddich to Glenlivet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rangers from Dorenell Ranger Service and Glenlivet Ranger Service for a walk up the River Fiddich all the way to its source then over the watershed to meet the River Livet. We’ll park at the finish point in Glenlivet and be transported by coach to the start at Bridgehaugh\, south of Dufftown. The route will follow Moray core path SP29\, going past Glenfiddich Lodge and up Glenfiddich itself where we’ll have an opportunity to see Elf House cave and the McHardy stone. Once up on the watershed\, we’ll hopefully have views across to the Cairngorms before following the Suie Burn down to the River Livet and out to Glenlivet. \nAlong the route\, the Rangers will talk about the Cultural and Natural History of the area and will be on hand to point out any wildlife along the route which could include Red Deer and various birds of prey including Golden Eagles and White-tailed Eagles. \nAlthough starting off on patchy tarmac track the route is mainly rough landrover tracks with a number of small stream and river crossings. A larger river crossing towards the end can be avoided by a bridge further upstream but walkers should come prepared for potentially wet feet. \n\nMark Johnston is Head Ranger for the 23000ha Glenlivet Estate. The Crown Estate acquired Glenlivet (now managed by Crown Estate Scotland) in 1937 which today comprises over 30 let farms\, 1500 acres of commercial forests and a sporting tenancy including grouse moors\, salmon fishing and deer stalking. \nStephen Reeves is Head Ranger for the Dorenell Ranger Service\, set up by EDF Renewables in July 2019 as part of the Dorenell Wind Farm on Cabrach and Glenfiddich estate. Based at the Dorenell Wind Farm Visitor Centre\, the Rangers are responsible for delivering the Access Strategy and Habitat Management Plan whilst delivering environmental education and guided walks in the Cabrach and surrounding area.

SUMMARY:Sounds of the Moray Way
DESCRIPTION:The Moray Way Soundwalk presents liminal moments using stories\, memories and atmospheres. It captures moments while walking that are so fleeting and familiar\, that they are often missed. \nThe soundwalk has been created and produced by Lise Olsen an AIM (Arts In Moray) Artist in residency for the Moray Way Association. Her practice involved collecting stories from the community and defining the ‘in between’ experiences happening within a dramatic Scottish landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sound map covers the 100 mile walking route of the Moray Way in the northeast of Scotland and is a tool for walking and thinking. By listening to the soundscapes and audio clips during your walk\, you can gain an insight into the rhythm\, history\, ecology and community of the Moray Way.
