SUMMARY:Clues in The Wild - Natural Navigation and Wildlife Signs
DESCRIPTION:There are countless hidden clues out in the natural world: how a tree’s shape can help you find your way\, the story in a patch of lichens or a badger’s track\, the blackbird’s alarm call telling you there’s a tawny owl roosting nearby … and much more. Learning the art of nature detection enriches our time outdoors and gives us a better understanding and appreciation of the many species we live alongside. Join naturalist and certified tracker Dan Puplett and discover how we can all read some of the vast array of information that is hidden in plain sight as we tap into our inner Sherlock Holmes!

SUMMARY:Useful Nature Foraging Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the bounty that nature has on offer\, from delicious mushrooms & berries\, and to useful timbers\, to helpful medicines. \nWe will be walking very slowly on a very short walk tasting\, sampling and collecting as we learn and explore the woods together. This time of year there should be berries\, mushrooms\, nuts and more\, all in abundance! \nRuaraidh has been foraging and exploring nature for over 30 years. His passion and love led him through degrees in zoology and wildlife biology\, taking him around the world as a wildlife biologist\, and back home to Scotland where he works for Nature 4 Health\, a local charity.

SUMMARY:Quarry Wood: a Victorian mystery 100-million-years in the making
DESCRIPTION:The walk will take in several disused sandstone quarries\, including Cutties Hillock Quarry where\, 150 years ago\, the fossil remains of reptiles were found only a few feet above fossil fish scales. Are these layers of sedimentary rock the same age? This question interested many Victorian geologists and drew scientists from all over Britain to Quarry Wood. A clue is found in Rosebrae Quarry where a break in the geological record can be examined: a 100-million-year geological time gap represented by a cranny allowing your finger to span 100 million years! \nNear Cutties Hillock Quarry\, we can also see evidence from the last ice-age where grooves in small exposures of rocks were created by ice sheets that once covered Moray (glacial striae to those who remember their school geography lessons!). \nFrom the meeting point at Leggat Quarry car park\, we’ll walk to Rosebrae and Cutties Hillock Quarries. This is a circular walk of about 3km\, including a gentle 0.5km uphill stretch on good paths to almost the top of Quarry Wood.
