DESCRIPTION:A circular walk meeting at the old Dallas Dhu distillery\, heading along the Dava way then back through the ancient and fascinating Altyre estate. We will look at and discuss different habitats and their ecological features as we explore the extremely varied scenery along this gentle walk. From plantation forest to native woodland\, open farmland to wetland wilderness\, we will cover a wide range of landscapes in this medium length walk. We will also look at some of the fascinating historical features of the ancient Altyre estate.

The outbound route is uphill\, a long but gradual incline along farm tracks & grass footpaths. We will stop for a picnic at Califer Viewpoint\, with fantastic 60 mile views on a clear day. Good chance of seeing red deer\, red grouse and mountain hare. And if we’re blessed with good fortune we might get a sighting of a hen harrier and merlin flying by.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Sunset Stroll - Findhorn Dunes
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we will walk around the Trust’s boundary to show you the work we are doing to limit the growth of non-native trees\, which hinder the Dunes’ biological diversity. We will include the beach\, which will be at low tide at 17.43 hrs\, and the dune heath\, including overgrown areas\, all the way South towards the wind turbines. \nYou’ll see and hear about the flora (lichens\, pines\, invasive trees\, etc.)\, the archaeology (Bronze Age\, Fishing\, WW2)\, the landscape (erosion\, raised beaches\, delicate surfaces)\, the challenges (vehicles\, fires\, dogs out of control\, litter\, etc.)\, and the fauna (birds\, insects\, and rabbits). Sunset is at 22.18 hrs and we’re hoping for super views across the Firth. \n

DESCRIPTION:We’ll start at 2 pm with a short circular walk and return to the hub for tea and cake at 3 pm. We will briefly review and discuss our busy past year\, and then the formal part of the AGM will take place\, but it only ever takes a few minutes. We will be finished by 4 pm.\n\nParking at the hub is very limited\, but there is a public car park a few hundred yards away by the village playing fields.\n\nWe do hope you can come along for a chat!

SUMMARY:A Fisherman's Diary
DESCRIPTION:Learn how Kate explored the diary stories\, mapping significant and poignant locations marked by history and community. Inspired by the walk\, Kate has also created artworks that will be part of the AIM (Arts in Moray) Showcase at UHI Moray\, Inner Art Gallery on Saturday\, March 7\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nWith special thanks to Lossiemouth Fisheries and Community Museum\, Isobel Nelson\, Dennis Slater\, Davey Mackenzie and Angie Stewart. \nAbout Kate Cameron Reid \nhttps://www.katecameronreid.com \nKate Cameron Reid is a multidisciplinary\, contemporary artist. Her work is primarily autobiographical and self-explorative\, recreating fragments of a narrative in each piece. Often utilising personal belongings or found objects as a metaphor\, she aims to draw the viewer into her work through the intimacy of the story being told. Each work is a fragment of time\, depicting memories and life events\, exploring emotionally charged themes of loss\, grief\, trauma\, and fragility. The forefront of her creative practice is to raise questions in the storytelling of each piece and create continuous conversation\, with the fundamental intention for human connection. \nA graduate of Central Saint Martins (BA Hons)\, Kate started her career on Savile Row\, worked in the fashion industry for 15 years and lectured at Ravensbourne University London\, before transitioning to contemporary art. Having previously lived in London\, Kate relocated to Scotland and now resides on the North-East coast. Kate has recently exhibited at the Cabrach Trust\, Elgin Cathedral and The Royal Scottish Academy. \nArts In Moray (AIM) \nSince June 2021\, the Moray Way Association has been part of the Arts In Moray (AIM) Collective\, which initially received funding from Creative Scotland’s Culture Collective programme. This national pilot programme aimed to establish a network of creative practitioners\, organisations\, and communities working together to make a positive difference locally and nationally in response to COVID-19. \nThe AIM collective\, which includes Dance North Scotland\, Moray Arts Development Engagement (M:ADE)\, Wildbird\, and the Moray Way Association\, has employed new and radical approaches to engaging a network of creative practitioners and communities within Moray through residency programmes that have supported artists from 2021 to 2025. \nThe Moray Way AIM III project also features the work of Hayley Anderson\, Stuart Mc Adam\, Jennifer Fraser Harris\, and Alex Williamson.  Each artist was asked to reimagine The Pilgrimages in Moray – A Guide to the County\, a 1924 pocket guidebook featuring descriptions of walks across Moray. Discovered by the MWA Chair at Moray Waste Busters\, this historic book was originally created to inspire both locals and visitors to explore the rich heritage of Moray. However\, the author lamented the absence of illustrations\, maps\, and reference notes—elements that could have brought the book to life for a wider audience. \nEach artist collaborated with a member of the Moray Way Association\, walking the routes together. The artists then went on to refine or reimagine the routes\, bringing them to life through their perspectives. Using creative and innovative approaches\, they created contemporary interpretations of the walks that engaged new audiences while celebrating the stories of Moray.

SUMMARY:Are We Being Good Ancestors? – A Reflective Walk Through Time
DESCRIPTION:Join artist-in-residence Jenny Fraser Harris and Stephen Coomber from the Moray Way Association for a thought-provoking walk through Elgin\, exploring how our past and present shape the future. Starting at the Plainstones\, we’ll step back in time to uncover Elgin’s historic ‘forum’ before journeying through Cooper Park\, the Cathedral\, and beyond\, pausing to personally and collectively reflect\, question\, and reimagine our role as ancestors of the future. \nThe walk will conclude at the AIM (Arts In Moray) Showcase at Moray School of Art where we’ll visit the art piece inspired by these themes and you will be invited to contribute to the piece through an optional short writing activity. \nAbout Jenny Fraser Harris \nJenny Fraser Harris is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in cultural ecology.“I explore themes of resilience\, both human and environmental\, through abstract painting\, material experimentation\, and reflective dialogue. My practice seeks to stretch time and consider the long-term\, whilst examining the intricate relationships between people and land. Through layers of paint and material\, I uncover the interconnected\, often-overlooked stories that shape our present and influence the world around us. I develop and integrate materials and pigments sourced from ‘waste’ and bio-substances\, using them to contrast and amplify these narratives. This national pilot programme aimed to establish a network of creative practitioners\, organisations\, and communities working together to make a positive difference locally and nationally in response to COVID-19. \nThe AIM collective\, which includes Dance North Scotland\, Moray Arts Development Engagement (M:ADE)\, Wildbird\, and the Moray Way Association\, has employed new and radical approaches to engaging a network of creative practitioners and communities within Moray through residency programmes that have supported artists from 2021 to 2025. \nThe Moray Way AIM III project also features the work of Hayley Anderson\, Kate Cameron Reid\, Stuart Mc Adam\, and Alex Williamson.  Each artist was asked to reimagine The Pilgrimages in Moray – A Guide to the County\, a 1924 pocket guidebook featuring descriptions of walks across Moray. Discovered by the MWA Chair at Moray Waste Busters\, this historic book was originally created to inspire both locals and visitors to explore the rich heritage of Moray. However\, the author lamented the absence of illustrations\, maps\, and reference notes—elements that could have brought the book to life for a wider audience. \nEach artist collaborated with a member of the Moray Way Association\, walking the routes together. The artists then went on to refine or reimagine the routes\, bringing them to life through their perspectives. Using creative and innovative approaches\, they created contemporary interpretations of the walks that engaged new audiences while celebrating the stories of Moray. \n

SUMMARY:Quarry Wood: a Victorian mystery 100-million-years in the making
DESCRIPTION:The walk will take in several disused sandstone quarries\, including Cutties Hillock Quarry where\, 150 years ago\, the fossil remains of reptiles were found only a few feet above fossil fish scales. Are these layers of sedimentary rock the same age? This question interested many Victorian geologists and drew scientists from all over Britain to Quarry Wood. A clue is found in Rosebrae Quarry where a break in the geological record can be examined: a 100-million-year geological time gap represented by a cranny allowing your finger to span 100 million years! \nNear Cutties Hillock Quarry\, we can also see evidence from the last ice-age where grooves in small exposures of rocks were created by ice sheets that once covered Moray (glacial striae to those who remember their school geography lessons!). \nFrom the meeting point at Leggat Quarry car park\, we’ll walk to Rosebrae and Cutties Hillock Quarries. This is a circular walk of about 3km\, including a gentle 0.5km uphill stretch on good paths to almost the top of Quarry Wood.

DESCRIPTION:Starting at the Hillocks\, this evening circular walk will start and finish at the Hillocks\, the house built by Ramsay in 1909 for his mother Annie and his young family to live in while he and his wife Margaret travelled to Australia and the East on political tours. \nThe walk will then go to the Mercat Cross at ‘old Lossiemouth’\, along the promenade\, which was the location of the original harbour dating back to the 14th Century\, and onto the location of the old railway station. Walk around the ‘new’ harbour built in the 19th Century and then up to the old library/town hall building\, which Ramsay spoke at on its official opening in January 1904. Finally\, wander along Prospect Terrace\, where there is a viewpoint of Lossie\, and marvel at the view. \nThis will be a leisurely walk with stops on the way to talk about the places mentioned above\, with photos and videos to accompany the talk. SUMMARY:Stories from the Land - Local history\, ecology and community care
DESCRIPTION:A walk starting at the Park Ecovillage Findhorn\, interpreting the history\, ecology and community care of land to the north\, which is a tiny remnant of the second largest sand dune system in Europe. You will be introduced to the work of environmental charity the Findhorn Hinterland Trust that manages this fascinating mosaic of different habitats by first visiting their Conservation Hub built from local timber with signs and maps that will inform the participant. \nThe walk includes woodland interpretation including looking at squirrel signs and homes and how sensitive management is i increasing the biodiversity of this habitat\, the tiny and peaceful Woodland Garden with its rustic Outdoor Learning Space and then past pony grazing to help with conservation grazing of rare lowland grassland habitat. \nSigns of past use as an airbase and the disposal of over 1000 planes after WW2 will be pointed out and discussed. Then there will be a look at the rare dune heath habitat with its incredible array of rare lichens and mini-beasts that is being threatened by the advance of trees and gorse before going back into the forest to view the first community-run green burial site in Moray with its Woodland Shelter gathering space. \nFinally\, we will climb the newly uncovered dune\, which is part of the charity’s dune restoration work\, for a 360-degree view over the land from the Cairngorms\, Culbin\, the Findhorn peninsula and village out to the Moray Firth and beyond. From there\, it is a short stroll back to the Phoenix Cafe for well-deserved refreshments.

DESCRIPTION:A stroll around historic Auldearn: Rather than following a time-line\, we’ll dip in and out of various events from the long history of the village\, once briefly of higher status than neighbour Nairn; also link back wherever possible to Clan Brodie. \nScottish kings\, a Royal castle and rebellion; a key battle of the religious civil war between Covenanters and Royalists\, and its aftermath; the coming of St Colm (St Colomba) and Christianity to Northern Pictland; and the confessions of Isobel Gowdie\, that provide one of the most comprehensive insights into European witchcraft. \n‘Auld (old) Eren’ has many gripping tales to tell. \n  \nBrodie Castle and Estate is part of the National Trust for Scotland. Local to Grantown\, his family have lived in the area for centuries. He regularly leads walks in and around Grantown and has written three books on Strathspey placenames\, myths and legends.
