SUMMARY:Mindful Photography Walk
DESCRIPTION:Take a walk along the Moray Coast and learn how to connect with nature through photography. During this guided walk\, we will make our way along the coastal path between Burghead and Hopeman. While walking\, Kim will open your eyes up to the many photography opportunities available along the way. Using your camera (or phone)\, you will learn to see the world around you in a new light and capture many subjects as you do so. This walk will be done at a leisurely pace\, allowing us to mindfully observe and tune in to the world around us. Kim will encourage you to use all your senses to find photographic subjects. This will include watching the waves crash to shore\, listening out for wildlife and touching the rocks that line the coastline. We will focus on the smaller aspects of the landscape and how to capture all the shapes and patterns that can be found around us. Halfway through the walk\, we will stop by the sea to eat our lunch and do some mindful exercises. \nThis walk is open to all photographic abilities – no matter what camera or phone you own.

SUMMARY:Nature Writing Coastal Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The natural world is an endless source of inspiration for wildlife writer and photographer Rebecca Gibson. Join her as she walks part of the Moray Coast Trail from Burghead to Cummingston and back. \nThis three-hour event will involve a leisurely stroll along the coast path\, keeping an eye out for any passing wildlife both in the fields and out at sea. You will be encouraged to notice not just the sights but also the sounds\, textures and smells of your surroundings. Nature writing is most immersive when it involves all the senses. \nDuring the walk there will be a nature writing workshop\, using crashing waves\, chittering stonechats and prickly gorse as sensory prompts. You will have the chance to read out what you’ve written if you’d like to\, but there’s absolutely no pressure to share. Afterwards\, we will make our way back along the coast path to the car park\, hopefully feeling refreshed and inspired.

SUMMARY:Story walk\, Culbin: In the footsteps of botanist Mary McCallum Webster
DESCRIPTION:A highlight of the exterior of the Falconer Museum\, ‘a Victorian gem in the heart of Forres’\, are eight keystone portrait masks of eminent scientists and celebrities of the period\, but…they are all men! \nHence the decision by Friends of the Falconer\,  as part of the museum’s 150th-anniversary celebrations\, to recognise a woman scientist\, Mary McCallum Webster\, of Dyke\, whose ‘Flora of Moray\, Nairn and East Inverness’\, published 1978\, has been described as a masterwork. \nCulbin forest was her happy hunting ground. During our walk\, we shall do some plant finding\, led by an expert\, although we can’t promise her favourite\, a wintergreen; and listen\, briefly\, to her story\, told by Mary Byatt\, author of the appreciation of McCallum Webster in the book ‘Women of Moray’. We also hope to have some anecdotes from the family of Olga Stewart\, McCallum Webster’s main illustrator. \nLook out for more Friends’ Falconer150 events later in the year.

SUMMARY:Evening Sunset Photography Walk
DESCRIPTION:Whether you own a camera or just have a camera phone\, Kim will open your eyes to the many subjects you can photograph when walking in nature. During the walk\, you will be encouraged to use all your senses to find photographic opportunities. As well as capturing the landscape around us\, we will also be looking at the smaller aspects of nature and subjects you may never have thought about capturing before. \nThis walk is planned in the evening and around sunset to showcase the important role of light when photography. While a good sunset cannot be guaranteed\, it is hoped that we will be lucky enough to enjoy a golden sunset along the beach to end the evening walk. Halfway through the walk\, we will stop to undertake some mindfulness exercises. This will help you tune your senses to what is happening around us and open up more photographic opportunities.

SUMMARY:West Avon Side Social Stroll and Kirkmichael Green Hall BBQ
DESCRIPTION:A 2.5-mile stroll\, beginning along the River Avon\, before following a gentle climb through farmland and to the moorland at the foot of the Cromdale Hills. \nPre-Covid this was an annual event and it would be great to get it back with a mix of visitors to the area and residents of the Tomintoul and Glenlivet area. A great chance to chat and share knowledge of the area while wandering through a beautiful mix of scenery and looking for wildlife. \nThe Kirkmichael Green Hall is throwing a BBQ and Raffle afterwards starting at 4 pm with everyone welcome. \n  \nLying between the Ladder Hills and the Cromdale Hills in the Cairngorms National Park\, the two broad straths of the rivers Avon and Livet form the 23\,000 hectare Glenlivet Estate\, part of Crown Estate Scotland. The Crown Estate acquired the Glenlivet Estate in 1937 which today comprises over 30 let farms\, 1500 acres of commercial forests and a sporting tenancy including grouse moors\, salmon fishing and deer stalking. Over the last 25 years\, the Estate has encouraged the development of recreation and tourism\, welcoming a wide range of visitors who come to explore and enjoy the countryside\, helping support local businesses and the tourism economy. The Estate provides a visitor centre\, a range of educational services\, an extensive network of walking trails and a dedicated mountain bike centre.

SUMMARY:Findhorn Dunes Walk
DESCRIPTION:We shall walk around much of the area to see the varied\, enduring\, but delicate nature of the dunes and their plant cover. The area is now firmly established as a site of National Importance for lichens\, and we’ll explore many of these and other plant cover\, including some invasive species. \nOn route\, we’ll also see the Trusts’ work in looking after this area and a chance to see a demonstration on pine sapling removal. On a clear day\, there are expansive views across the Moray Firth to Sutherland and Caithness. The Moray Firth has a rich marine habitat\, and a variety of wildlife can be spotted from the height advantage of some of the larger dunes. \nOn the walk\, we shall see several remnants of industrial archaeology and evidence of further coastal erosion.

SUMMARY:Four Hillocks and a Cavity
DESCRIPTION:The 25 ha. area of known as Clunyhill Woodlands has been a public parkland and pleasure ground since at least the late 18th. Century. It consists of four\, in places\, steep-sided\, hillocks symmetrically placed around a single hollow .known sometimes as Hell’s Hole. It is thus somewhat like a miniature model of the four big peaks of the Cairngorms with the Larig Ghru in the middle.\nIt has a myriad network of footpaths and the walk is a two-hour investigation of some of its various faces. It is a forestry area managed on behalf of Moray Council\, and in the midst of it are three large features\, the Nelson Tower visible from many roads around\, the area of what was from 1848 to recently the town cemetery\, and the 19th century mansion which accommodates students at the Findhorn Foundation College\, and which was formerly Forres Hydro\, a major Highland Railway built\, hotel which had an international reputation for the therapeutic properties of its surroundings.
