SUMMARY:Cooks Cairn with Pete Hags
DESCRIPTION:Starts and finishes at NJ 351 343 Dorenell Wind Farm main entrance Car Park. (Glacks of Balloch). Mostly off-path and off-road after a warm-up on the forest track. This is a spectacular\, short hill run which takes the ridge from Scaut Hill (Trig point) to Cook’s Cairn and back. \nThere are turbine paths that cross the route\, but as they lead nowhere\, the best route is on the ridge direct. The object of this short run is to build skills to cross rough hill country running style. There are spectacular views to Cabrach (left) Corryhabbie (right)\, Blackwater\, Glenlivet and the Ladder hills; all part of this group. Many other combinations are possible in this range and this is a good introduction to it. There are no river crossings needed but expect to get wet feet unless it is bone dry. The situation is exposed (wind or heat). If the winds are too high\, there is a plan B to simply turn back at Carn Allt Chlaiginn. \nThe route takes in a huge variety of surfaces: some forest track\, steep grass\, rough hill surface\, heather\, peat hags and slight bogginess. There are no cliffs\, no crags and no scrambling is needed. It is a great introduction to the ‘off-piste’ nature of this area.

SUMMARY:Heldon Hill Sunset Challenge Walk
DESCRIPTION:This event is now cancelled – The LDWA are still running their event LDWA Taster Walk -A Tour of Forres. \n  \nWe are a local group of the Long Distance Walkers Association serving a large area in the north of Scotland\, roughly everything north of a line between Aberdeen and the Isle of Mull\, including the Western Isles\, Orkney and Shetland \nWe not only welcome members and guests from our area but also visitors from further afield to this far-flung corner of the country which offers so much in the way of walking in areas steeped in whisky and wildlife\, history and culture\, geology\, landscape and sport. \nWe offer our members at least one group walk each month advertised in Strider (the LDWA magazine)\, and aim to have some social walks in-between advertised on our local group page. Our walks are being specially planned to offer participants a range of walking experiences from coast to Corbett and from river to glen. \nAs well as social walks\, we put on two challenge walks each year: Heldon Hill Sunset Walk\, and the Laich o’Moray 50-mile challenge in October.

SUMMARY:Cromdale Hills from Avonside
DESCRIPTION:Join the Estate Ranger on a day’s hillwalking to this relatively unfrequented part of Glenlivet. Making our way from West Avonside\, we’ll start big and ascend to the highest point in the Cromdales\, Creagan a’ Chaise. At 722m this is classified as a Fiona which is a mountain in Scotland between 2000 & 2500 feet high – these were previously known as Grahams. Near the trig point at the top is a rather large Cairn built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. \nFrom there we will traverse the ridge also taking in the nearby Coronation Cairn\, built to commemorate the crowning of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria in 1902. On a clear day\, the views from the ridge are excellent looking to the Cairngorms and across Speyside. We will continue to take in the lesser summits of Carn Eachie and Carn a Ghille Chearn before making a rough descent back towards Knock farmhouse and onwards to the Car Park. \nThis walk will hopefully provide opportunities to see moorland birds and deer while crossing typical northeast Scotland hill and moorland territory. \nThe terrain will be a mix of rough track and heather moorland\, involve some steep climbs and take us into a remote\, exposed country. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water. A reasonable level of fitness and the knowledge that you are able to handle this type of terrain is required.

SUMMARY:Lecht Mine\, Coire Buidhe and Carn Mor
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Rob Cochrane to explore the unique industrial\, cultural and natural heritage of Coire Buidhe\, and bag the Corbet summit of Carn Mor in the process! \nMeeting at the Well of Lecht carpark\, we will set off along the historic smuggling route up onto Carn Dulack\, above Coire Buidhe. As we climb we will have a fantastic birds-eye view of the historic Lecht Mine and the associated earth works\, which provide an insight into how industrialisation rapidly changed the face of this part of Moray. \nOnce up high\, we’ll leave the path behind and traverse a broad ridge which gradually climbs up through an impressive montane blanket bog. On a sunny day we will be treated to an impressive display of Odenata (damsel and dragonflies) as well as sightings of some unique and highly specialised botany and bird life. \nWith expansive views at out backs on a clear day\, we will then branch off onto the main summit ridge of the ladder hills to tag the broad peak of Carn Mor (804m)- the highest point on Glenlivet Estate\, and a Corbet. From here we can look down on mosaic of land uses\, showcasing the true diversity and value that Moray’s rural economy contributes to Scotland. \nFrom here we’ll turn back on ourselves and make our way south\, towards the expansive view of the North Cairngorms\, before decending back into Coire Buidhe via an off-path route. We will then end the day by visiting the historic Lecht Mine workings themselves before making out way back to the cars.
