SUMMARY:Clues in The Wild - Natural Navigation and Wildlife Signs
DESCRIPTION:There are countless hidden clues out in the natural world: how a tree’s shape can help you find your way\, the story in a patch of lichens or a badger’s track\, the blackbird’s alarm call telling you there’s a tawny owl roosting nearby … and much more. Learning the art of nature detection enriches our time outdoors and gives us a better understanding and appreciation of the many species we live alongside. Join naturalist and certified tracker Dan Puplett and discover how we can all read some of the vast array of information that is hidden in plain sight as we tap into our inner Sherlock Holmes!

SUMMARY:Glenfiddich to Glenlivet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rangers from Dorenell Ranger Service and Glenlivet Ranger Service for a walk up the River Fiddich all the way to its source\, then over the watershed to meet the River Livet. We’ll park at the finish point in Glenlivet and be transported by coach to the start at Bridgehaugh\, south of Dufftown. The route will follow Moray core path SP29\, going past Glenfiddich Lodge and up Glenfiddich itsel\,f where we’ll have an opportunity to see Elf House cave and the McHardy stone. Once up on the watershed\, we’ll hopefully have views across to the Cairngorms before following the Suie Burn down to the River Livet and out to Glenlivet. \nAlong the route\, the Rangers will talk about the Cultural and Natural History of the area and will be on hand to point out any wildlife along the route\, which could include Red Deer and various birds of prey\, including Golden Eagles and White-tailed Eagles. \nAlthough starting off on a patchy tarmac track\, the route is mainly rough\, landrover tracks with a number of small streams and river crossings. A larger river crossing towards the end can be avoided by a bridge further upstream but walkers should come prepared for potentially wet feet. \n\nMark Johnston is Head Ranger for the 23000ha Glenlivet Estate. The Crown Estate acquired Glenlivet (now managed by Crown Estate Scotland) in 1937\, which today comprises over 30 let farms\, 1500 acres of commercial forests and a sporting tenancy including grouse moors\, salmon fishing and deer stalking. \nStephen Reeves is Head Ranger for the Dorenell Ranger Service\, set up by EDF Renewables in July 2019 as part of the Dorenell Wind Farm on the Cabrach and Glenfiddich estate. Based at the Dorenell Wind Farm Visitor Centre\, the Rangers are responsible for delivering the Access Strategy and Habitat Management Plan whilst delivering environmental education and guided walks in the Cabrach and surrounding area.

SUMMARY:Drawn Into the Landscape: Geology and Art Along the Moray Coast
DESCRIPTION:Elgin Museum Volunteers Dave and Claire are your guides on this circular walk around the Portknockie coastline. We’ll explore the fascinating geology of the area\, learn about the heritage of the village\, and make a series of sketches along the way to create a visual story of our walk. \nWe’ll visit Portknockie Harbour\, Green Castle\, Bow Fiddle Rock\, the Whale’s Mou rock formation\, Jenny’s Well and Cave\, before returning through the village. Accessibility of part of the route is dependent on tide times\, so the start location and direction of travel will be confirmed nearer the time. \nThe route is over uneven ground and pavements\, and includes some steep terrain. We’ll also be following the path along the cliff tops\, where there is a steep drop on one side. A reasonable level of fitness is required. \nIt is essential that participants wear or carry suitable clothing and footwear that are appropriate for the path and potential weather conditions. Items to be considered include multiple layers\, waterproofs\, sturdy walking shoes or boots\, hats\, sunglasses\, insect repellent and sunscreen. If you have a small folding stool\, you may wish to bring this (or a small towel/blanket) to sit on while we sketch. \nSufficient food & liquid should also be carried. Toilet facilities are available at Portknockie Harbour. \nNo previous drawing experience is required! Price includes all necessary art supplies to capture a unique memento of your walk.

SUMMARY:Forres: A Walk in the Middle Ages
DESCRIPTION:A walk with local history expert Dr John Barrett will trace the origins and development of the Royal Burgh of Forres in the present-day townscape. The exploration will show how a medieval royal burgh was planned and how Forres occupies an important place in the history of Moray and Scotland. We will look at buildings and landscapes. We will find prehistoric and Pictish remains on the site of the medieval town. And we will find a place of power in the heart of Moray (not to mention Macbeth\, witches and several ‘orrible murders).

SUMMARY:The Smugglers Trail
DESCRIPTION:This guided walk follows the Malcolm Gillespie Smugglers’ Trail through the open uplands of the Braes of Glenlivet\, quickly leaving Chapeltown behind for a landscape of big skies\, rolling hills and real remoteness. As the route climbs steadily away from the village\, views widen\, and the modern world fades\, replaced by a strong sense of space and quiet that sets the tone for the journey. \nSkirting the Ladder Hills\, the walk enters classic whisky-smuggling country. Juniper-dotted slopes\, hidden burns and steep corries provided perfect cover for illicit whisky stills\, with smugglers using these discreet routes to move spirit across the hills under cover of darkness. The landscape feels unchanged\, and it’s easy to imagine whisky being quietly distilled and carried out through this rugged terrain. \nAt the high point of the route\, expansive views open across the Suie and the Gordon flats\, a natural lookout once used to watch for approaching excise officers. Today\, the drama comes from the wildlife and the scale of the land itself\, with chances to see red deer\, grouse and birds of prey\, and a powerful sense of exposure and freedom in the open moorland. \nThe return leg crosses wide\, open ground and winding burns before easing back towards Chapeltown\, with fine views to the Bochel and across the Braes of Glenlivet. It’s a walk that combines wild scenery\, strong whisky heritage and a feeling of stepping into a lesser-known Highland landscape\, best enjoyed at a steady pace with time to absorb the views and stories along the way.

SUMMARY:Glenfiddich and Blackwater Lodge by E-bike
DESCRIPTION:This ride is aimed cyclists who are competent on a bike but are looking for some extra support or company to go on a longer adventure. There is a real mix of terrain on this ride\, including tarmac\, dirt\, wind farm roads and rough land rover tracks with multiple small river crossings. Although most of the terrain is well-surfaced track\, participants should be aware that some sections are loose rock\, including one steep descent down to the Suie. You will be accompanied by a trained MTB leader\, and we will individually assess these sections when we come across them\, and the worst sections and river crossings can be walked if required. Even though the e-bike will help you up hills\, you still need to be prepared to be in the saddle most of the day. \nYou can either bring along your own e-bike or hire one from the DDCA via https://dufftowncommunity.co.uk/community-type/bikes/ A Mountain bike is required for this ride. A helmet is essential if attending and gloves and eye protection are strongly advised along with padded shorts. \nThroughout the day we will also take the time to look out for wildlife which could include Red Deer\, Hen Harriers\, Merlin\, Mountain Hare\, Golden Eagles and White-tailed Eagles.

SUMMARY:St Colm\, Covenanters and Confessions
DESCRIPTION:A stroll around historic Auldearn: Rather than following a time-line\, we’ll dip in and out of various events from the long history of the village\, once briefly of higher status than neighbour Nairn; also link back wherever possible to Clan Brodie. \nScottish kings\, a Royal castle and rebellion; a key battle of the religious civil war between Covenanters and Royalists\, and its aftermath; the coming of St Colm (St Colomba) and Christianity to Northern Pictland; and the confessions of Isobel Gowdie\, that provide one of the most comprehensive insights into European witchcraft. \n‘Auld (old) Eren’ has many gripping tales to tell. \n  \nBrodie Castle and Estate is part of the National Trust for Scotland. The Boath Doocot at Auldearn is also part of their collection of over 100 places across Scotland which the Trust takes care of to protect and preserve for future generations. \nBrodie Castle and Estate volunteers: walk ‘producer’\, Gordon Scott\, and experienced guide\, Gareth Nicholas\nBrodie Castle and Estate staff will also be in attendance.

SUMMARY:Farmers \, Fishwives\, Foresters and Foes. Some visitors to the markets and fairs of Forres.
DESCRIPTION:We’ll take a leisurely walk through the heart of the town and discover how people came to Forres to trade produce\, livestock\, goods and their own selves. What was kebbuck? What was the Lowran Mairket? How many folk thronged the streets on Feein’ Day. Some of the reasons people made there way here might be surprising to us today.\nWe’ll start at the east end of the High Street and walk along to the Market Cross. From there we’ll leave the High Street to follow the original main route into the town\, look at the Market Green and the site of the indoor Mart. The walk will take us in a loop back over the old brewery bridge to finish by the site of Forres Castle\, which is next to the post office. \nFrom the east end of the original Borough\, we’ll follow the High Street\, then trace the route of the old main road into Forres to return to the Market Green and the site of the Mart. At the south of the the green we’ll cross the old brewery bridge to come back up to finish by the original site of Forres Castle. \nKath Todd will be leading this event to raise funds for the Moray Way Association. There will be a concession for members. If you are not already a member\, you will be able to become one by signing up here >

SUMMARY:Journey to the Centre of Findhorn Bay
DESCRIPTION:Robert the Bruce granted Kinloss Abbey the fishing rights of Findhorn Bay. Tidal fish traps (yairs) were set up in the Bay by the monks. Remnants of these will be seen. \nIn addition\, the opportunity will be taken to see other industrial archaeological items\, namely a Zulu fishing boat wreck from the late 19th century and the remains of Drem navigation lights from the Second World War. \nAll these remains are only revealed at very low tides. The low tide selected is the most suitable one during the MWOF\, when Low Water is at about 10:20 hrs.

SUMMARY:Cromdale Hills from Avonside
DESCRIPTION:Join the Estate Ranger on a day’s hillwalking to this relatively unfrequented part of Glenlivet. Making our way from West Avonside\, we’ll start big and ascend to the highest point in the Cromdales\, Creagan a’ Chaise. At 722m this is classified as a Fiona which is a mountain in Scotland between 2000 & 2500 feet high – these were previously known as Grahams. Near the trig point at the top is a rather large Cairn built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. \nFrom there we will traverse the ridge also taking in the nearby Coronation Cairn\, built to commemorate the crowning of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria in 1902. On a clear day\, the views from the ridge are excellent looking to the Cairngorms and across Speyside. We will continue to take in the lesser summits of Carn Eachie and Carn a Ghille Chearn before making a rough descent back towards Knock farmhouse and onwards to the Car Park. \nThis walk will hopefully provide opportunities to see moorland birds and deer while crossing typical northeast Scotland hill and moorland territory. \nThe terrain will be a mix of rough track and heather moorland\, involve some steep climbs and take us into a remote\, exposed country. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water. A reasonable level of fitness and the knowledge that you are able to handle this type of terrain is required.

SUMMARY:Kinloss Abbey - Preservation in Action at the Abbey
DESCRIPTION:Come and walk around the continuing changes we’re making. \nThis year’s Abbey Walk will show the progress the charity has made during the year to stabilise the locked Abbot’s House\, as part of a ‘walk and talk stroll’ around the whole site. There is a stepped 3-foot wall over which those with disabilities can be easily helped. Tours cover almost 1000 years of history\, from the Abbey’s Foundation as a monastery in 1150 by David I to its rise in prominence under the remarkable Bishop Robert Reid just before its decline after the Scottish Reformation in 1560\, aided by Oliver Cromwell. The interesting memento mori graveyard and its Commonwealth War Commission graves are included. \nKinloss Abbey is a Cistercian abbey at Kinloss in the county of Moray\, Scotland. The abbey was founded in 1150 by King David I and was first colonised by monks from Melrose Abbey. It received its Papal Bull from Pope Alexander III in 1174. Robert Reid was its nationally famous abbot in the 16th century just before the Scottish Reformation.

SUMMARY:Quarry Wood: a Victorian mystery 100-million-years in the making
DESCRIPTION:The walk will take in several disused sandstone quarries\, including Cutties Hillock Quarry where\, 150 years ago\, the fossil remains of reptiles were found only a few feet above fossil fish scales. Are these layers of sedimentary rock the same age? This question interested many Victorian geologists and drew scientists from all over Britain to Quarry Wood. A clue is found in Rosebrae Quarry where a break in the geological record can be examined: a 100-million-year geological time gap represented by a cranny allowing your finger to span 100 million years! \nNear Cutties Hillock Quarry\, we can also see evidence from the last ice-age where grooves in small exposures of rocks were created by ice sheets that once covered Moray (glacial striae to those who remember their school geography lessons!). \nFrom the meeting point at Leggat Quarry car park\, we’ll walk to Rosebrae and Cutties Hillock Quarries. This is a circular walk of about 3km\, including a gentle 0.5km uphill stretch on good paths to almost the top of Quarry Wood.
